Compared with eight leading LNP formulation platforms, the LNP Screening Array is the only platform that formulates on the liquid handler deck, reaching 100+ formulations per hour with no added instrument.
The biggest difference between LNP formulation platforms is where formulation happens, because that decides how many hands-on steps sit between a lipid library or cargo candidates and a characterized result. LNP screening teams commonly compare the LNP Screening Array with Cytiva NanoAssemblr, Unchained Labs Sunscreen, PreciGenome NanoGenerator, Inside Therapeutics TAMARA, KNAUER NanoScaler Pro, the Dolomite Automated Nanoparticle System, the Elveflow LNP Synthesis Pack, and the Fluigent Liposome Nanoparticle Production Station.
Six of these alternatives are dedicated benchtop instruments and two are pressure-driven kits the lab assembles. Every one of them adds a separate formulation system beside the liquid handler, and the LNP Screening Array is the only platform that formulates on the deck itself.
| Platform | Where formulation runs | Formulations per hour | Mixer preparation between formulations | Added equipment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LNP Screening Array | Liquid handler deck | 100+ | None | None (beyond a standard liquid handler) |
| Cytiva NanoAssemblr | Benchtop instrument | 10 to 30 | New cartridge loaded by hand each run or cleaning in place for reuse | Benchtop instrument |
| Unchained Labs Sunscreen | Benchtop instrument | 15 to 20 | Glass mixers cleaned between samples | Benchtop instrument |
| PreciGenome NanoGenerator | Benchtop instrument | Up to 64 | Chips changed by hand | Benchtop instrument |
| Inside Therapeutics TAMARA | Benchtop instrument | 15 | Mixer cleaned by hand | Benchtop instrument and dry gas supply |
| KNAUER NanoScaler Pro | Benchtop instrument | Not published | Fluid path cleaned between runs | Benchtop instrument |
| Dolomite Automated Nanoparticle System | Benchtop instrument | 40 | Washed between experiments | Benchtop instrument |
| Elveflow LNP Synthesis Pack | Pressure-driven kit | Under 20 | Purged or flushed by hand | Pressure controllers, flow sensors, and dry gas supply |
| Fluigent Liposome Nanoparticle Production Station | Pressure-driven kit | Not published | Chip cleaned by hand | Pressure controllers, flow sensors, tubing, and compressed air supply |
Formulation rates in the table are the figures each vendor publishes, and the hardware column lists what a lab adds beside its liquid handler to run each platform.
Every alternative formulates on a separate system, so lipid mixes and cargo dilutions are prepared off that system and loaded by hand beforehand, and formulated samples move by hand afterward into post-processing and characterization. Those handoffs repeat for every batch in a screen.
| Workflow step | Benchtop instruments | Pressure-driven kits | LNP Screening Array |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prepare lipid mixes and cargo dilutions | Off the instrument | Off the kit | On the liquid handler deck |
| Load inputs | Onto the instrument by hand | Into pressurized reservoirs by hand | On the liquid handler deck |
| Formulate | On the instrument | On the assembled kit | On the liquid handler deck |
| Collect samples | Off the instrument | From the kit outlet | On the liquid handler deck |
| Dilution and assay plate preparation | After a manual transfer | After a manual transfer | On the liquid handler deck |
With the LNP Screening Array, the liquid handler prepares lipid mixes and cargo dilutions from reagents on deck, dispenses them into the micromixers, and collects each formulation in its own reservoir. Every formulation finishes on deck, ready for buffer exchange and the team’s downstream characterization, with no recovery step from a separate instrument.
The LNP Screening Array produces each formulation in seconds and reaches 100+ formulations per hour. Each LNP Screening Array holds eight micromixers, and a single run spans as many LNP Screening Arrays as the deck has open positions. At published rates, a 96-formulation screen takes under an hour on the LNP Screening Array and from about 1.5 to nearly 10 hours on the alternatives.
| Platform | Time to reach 96 formulations |
|---|---|
| LNP Screening Array | Under 1 hour |
| PreciGenome NanoGenerator Flex-S Plus | About 1.5 hours |
| Dolomite Automated Nanoparticle System | About 2.5 hours |
| Cytiva NanoAssemblr Spark | 3 to 5 hours |
| Elveflow LNP Synthesis Pack | About 5 hours |
| Unchained Labs Sunscreen | 5 to 6.5 hours |
| Inside Therapeutics TAMARA | About 6.5 hours |
| Cytiva NanoAssemblr Ignite | Up to 10 hours |
Times are calculated from each vendor’s published formulations per hour. KNAUER, Fluigent, and the NanoGenerator Flex-S do not have published formulation rates. Every alternative also adds a cleaning step, purge, or chip change between formulations or runs. Even when that step is automated, it adds time to every screen, while the LNP Screening Array moves straight to the next formulation.
Many screening teams already run one or more benchtop formulation systems, and adding throughput on any of them means buying another instrument with its own bench space, control software, and setup.
| Adding capacity | Benchtop instruments | Pressure-driven kits | LNP Screening Array |
|---|---|---|---|
| What the team buys | Another instrument | Another set of pressure controllers, flow sensors, and chips | LNP Screening Arrays |
| Bench space | Another instrument footprint, such as the 57 kg Sunscreen | Another assembled setup | Open deck positions on the existing liquid handler |
| Installation | Another installation, with on-site qualification for the 50 kg NanoGenerator Flex-S Plus | Another assembly and connection | Automation protocol already installed |
| Utilities | Dry gas supply at 8 to 10 bar for TAMARA | Dry gas supply at 8 to 10 bar for Elveflow and compressed air supply for Fluigent | None beyond the liquid handler |
The LNP Screening Array runs on the liquid handler already in the lab, on platforms like Hamilton, Tecan, Opentrons, Formulatrix, and Dynamic Devices. Adding LNP Screening Arrays across open deck positions adds formulations to each run on the automation protocol we configured and installed for that platform.
